useList
useList
is an extended version of TanStack Query's useQuery
that supports all of its features and also adds some more.
When you need to fetch data according to sort, filter, pagination, etc. from a resource
, you can use the useList
hook. It will return the data and some functions to control the query.
It uses the
getList
method as the query function from thedataProvider
which is passed to<Refine>
.It uses a query key to cache the data. The query key is generated from the provided properties. You can see the query key by using the TanStack Query devtools.
Usage
Here is a basic example of how to use the useList
hook.
Pagination
The useList
hook supports the pagination feature. You can pass the pagination
property to enable pagination. To handle pagination, the useList
hook passes the pagination
property to the getList
method from the dataProvider
.

properties will trigger a new request.
Retrieving the Total Row Count
When the useList
hook calls the getList
method, it expects the response to include the total number of rows (rowCount
). The way this count is retrieved can vary based on the data provider:
- REST Providers: Frequently use the
x-total-count
header to determine the total count. - GraphQL Providers: Typically return the count in specific data fields, such as
pageInfo.total
. - Other Providers: Follow their own conventions for obtaining the total count.
If the backend doesn't provide a specific count, the getList
method may default to using the length of the returned data array as the rowCount
.

Sorting
The useList
hook supports the sorting feature,which you can enable by passing the sorters
property. useList
will then pass this property to the getList
method from the dataProvider
.
Dynamically changing the sorters
property will trigger a new request.
Filtering
The useList
hook supports the filtering feature. You can pass the filters
property to enable filtering. To handle filtering, the useList
hook passes the filters
property to the getList
method from the dataProvider
.

property will trigger a new request.
Realtime Updates
This feature is only available if you use a Live Provider.
When the useList
hook is mounted, it will call the subscribe
method from the liveProvider
with some parameters such as channel
, resource
etc. It is useful when you want to subscribe to live updates.
Properties
resource required
This parameter will be passed to the getList
method from the dataProvider
as a parameter. It is usually used as an API endpoint path but it all depends on how you handle the resource
in the getList
method.

If you have multiple resources with the same name, you can pass the identifier
instead of the name
of the resource. It will only be used as the main matching key for the resource, data provider methods will still work with the name
of the resource defined in the <Refine/>
component.

meta
is a special property that can be used to pass additional information to data provider methods for the following purposes:
- Customizing the data provider methods for specific use cases.
- Generating GraphQL queries using plain JavaScript Objects (JSON).
In the following example, we pass the headers
property in the meta
object to the create
method. With similar logic, you can pass any properties to specifically handle the data provider methods.

is the function that will be called on each interval.

is the elapsed time in milliseconds. It becomes undefined
when the request is completed.
